south collage September 30, 2020 Today I will talk about education and public schools in the United State. First, the purpose of public schools according to the National School Boards Association, "public education exists to serve the following purposes: To prepare students for college and the workforce, including preparing them for jobs that may not even exist yet due to rapidly changing technology. Help children fulfill their diverse potentials". There is also a good benefit to it, teachers have more qualifications, students spend more time studying core subjects, public schools can sponsor more activities, and the student population tends to be more diverse. But there is always a bad thing about everything! In many schools, especially the poorer areas. Too many of the students are dropping out well before high school graduation. Too many are receiving high school diplomas that do not certify academic confidence in basic subjects. Too many are being left unprepared for the world of work. Too many are being left unprepared to go on to higher education and advanced technical training. Besides that, there is not diversity in most schools and there are not good classes to teach about different cultures or different things around the world in the right way. For example, We don't have a good education about Black History Month in our schools. We always have the wrong idea about Arab people. We always think all Mexicans are illegal, etc. My point is these things are really important. Like we don't have classes that teach us or prepare us for the ACT or classes on how to budget or do taxes. When we grow up and become an adult these things are important and sadly 70-80% of young adults don't know how to do taxes and stuff like that. American schools should be more aware of the mental health of the students, a lot of students are experiencing bullying, depression, anxiety, physical abuse at home or in school, sexual abuse, people with special needs, etc. These things can be in schools like bullying, depression, and anxiety. Or it can be outside the schools like physical abuse at home, all of these can lead to one thing, which is suicide! Edited by Aya Alhaddad on Oct 1, 2020 at 9:40am

SOC 186 Week 2 Discussion: Writing Development (Step 2)

Initial Post:

Continuing with the topic from your Week 1 Discussion post, complete a discussion post of 2-3 paragraphs (150-300 words) describing how the topic you have chosen can be related to the sociological concepts of culture and the process of socialization or social structures as discussed in Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of your text, and in the Canvas materials. Remember, your ultimate goal is to combine your discussion posts into a paper in the last week of this course, so keep in mind what you have written before as you complete this assignment. Be sure to cite any sources you use.  You should be using your textbook as a source in this assignment.  Any other sources are optional.

Peer Feedback – Due by Day 7

Respond to at least one of your peers (preferably a peer that no one else has responded to so that everyone may both give and receive peer feedback) with any ideas you have that will help them develop their topic towards a final paper at the end of the term.  Be sure that your responses are substantive and constructive.
