Chapter 1 and 2: Abnormal Psychology and Life, Perspective on Abnormal Psychology

Your first discussion post will have two parts.

PART 1

Introduce yourself and give a brief autobiography; include your academic and career goals. In addition, why do you think studying abnormal psychology is relevant to your program and future career?

Please complete the required readings first, then bring in information/research (at least 2 key terms/concepts) from the required readings to answer the questions below:

After reading Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, you learned about the history of abnormal psychology and the various models for understanding how people think, feel, and behave. According to Kearny and Trull, 2018, “Abnormal Psychology is the scientific study of problematic feelings, thoughts, and behaviors associated with mental disorders.” Using the content from the required readings:

• Discuss the three basic criteria for defining “Abnormal” behavior. What are they and how are they a gauge of “Normality”?
• Describe at least two of the challenges associated with attempting to define “Abnormal” within these criteria. How could culture play a role in the challenges associated with these definitions?
• Define “Stigma” and recall a time when you or someone you know, was treated differently due to stigma. Which two “key” ways does the book recommend using to fight stigma in Psychology?
