CE220  Unit 6 Assignment

Creating Safe Learning Environments

This Assignment assesses the following Course Outcomes:

CE220-1: Identify elements for creating safe and healthy learning environments for young children.
CE220-3: Identify learning activities for young children that reinforce the principles of health, nutrition, and safety.
GEL-1.02: Demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials in Standard English.
GEL-8.02: Use principles of sound reasoning.

So far, you have focused on the health and nutrition of children. For this Assignment, you are going to focus on safe and healthy learning environments.

It is essential that children and their families understand healthy choices concerning the food they eat. Early childhood professionals should understand and implement safe food-handling procedures. It is critical that various nutritional needs of the children are considered when planning meals and snacks in the early childhood care setting.

For this Assignment, you will write a 2-3 page descriptive essay (excluding title and reference page) explaining an ideal safe indoor and outdoor learning environment as well as learning activities. Use the Unit 9 Assignment Template to complete this Assignment.

Your Assignment must include:

Start by selecting one of the following age groups:
  • 12-36 months
  • 3-5 years
  • 5–6 years
  • 6-8 years

The introductory paragraph should specify the age group you selected, and include the importance of providing a healthy indoor and outdoor learning environment. It should clearly address the connection between the environment and the setting in order to encourage young children’s safety.

The Ideal Facility

Describe in detail for each of the following elements necessary for a center based on your chosen age group:

  • Location
  • Space
  • Security
  • Facility maintenance
  • Upkeep procedures and practices

Be sure to include outdoor/playground safety guidelines for young children, specifically for those in your chosen age group. This part of your paper should be approximately two to three (2-3) paragraphs.

The Ideal Room

Use critical thinking to describe, in detail, the ideal room for your chosen age group. Illustrate sound reasoning skills when including the various elements of the indoor environment that relate to children’s safety in a learning environment (e.g., setup, traffic patterns, furniture, materials, accessibility, etc.). Include appropriate classroom maintenance and upkeep procedures as outlined in your text. This part of your paper should be approximately one to two (1-2) paragraphs.

You should design a graphic of the ideal room layout for this age group and include the graphic in Appendix A of the paper. You may use one of the following resources for help:

Classroom Floor Planner: Floorplanner HQ. Retrieved from

Learning Activities

Identify at least four (4) age-appropriate learning activities for your chosen age group that could be used to reinforce good health and nutrition as well as safety. These activities should be used to introduce or teach good health, nutrition, and safety to children, reinforce the children’s learning of such concepts or allow them to practice/demonstrate their understanding of these concepts in some way.

You will need to identify the concept each learning activity addresses, briefly summarize or discuss each one, and explain how it is appropriate for your chosen age group. Use information from the National Association for the Education of Young Children to support your statements and reasoning. This portion of the assignment should be at least two to three (2-3) paragraphs.

Summarize the main points of the paper.
