Attending live Seminars is highly recommended, as it is important to your academic success. The Seminar allows you to review the important concepts presented in each unit, discuss work issues in your lives that pertain to these concepts, ask your instructor questions, and chat in real-time with your fellow classmates. In this course, there are graded Seminars in Units 1 through 9. You must either attend and participate in the live Seminar or complete the Seminar Alternative Assignment in order to earn points for this part of the class.
Cultural Practices
Early childhood care professionals must be able to recognize abuse and respond appropriately; there are specific laws about what constitutes child abuse and neglect. You will discuss the Case Study and questions from the text (p. 275) during the Seminar:
Would this cultural practice be considered abuse? Why or why not?
How do cultural differences affect parental practices and values?
Why is it important for teachers to acquire an understanding of cultural differences?
What are the characteristics of children who have been victims of abuse?
What should be done to report suspected signs of abuse?
To earn Seminar credit for this unit, complete oneof the following options below:
Option 1- Attend Seminar:
You are strongly encouraged to fulfill your Seminar requirement through this option if possible. Many students find the synchronous discussion very helpful because the instructor will clarify the unit information and your classmates may pose questions that you also have about the material.
Option 2- Alternative Assignment:
If you are unable to participate in the live Seminar, submit a 200–300-word essay answering the Seminar questions listed above. Seminar Option 2 postings need to be in Microsoft Word and incorporate the text material. Your response to the Seminar questions should be composed in complete sentences and paragraphs. Be sure to answer all questions and include references to earn your Seminar points. Please refer to the Seminar rubric for grading details and contact your instructor if you have questions about anything covered in the Seminar.
The Option 2 Assignment should be completed and submitted to the Unit 8 Seminar Dropbox before the unit deadline (Tuesday night).
