Renaissance Assignment
Select one artwork from Chapter 17, The 17th and 18th Centuries, that interests you. In 300 to 400 words, write a brief description and analysis explaining how the artist used the visual elements and principles of design create a composition that holds your attention. Do not discuss the “story” of the artwork, i.e., the subject matter, theme, or backstory. Focus on the formal elements only.
Please include an image of the artwork, image citation, and an identification of the artwork including art, title, date, medium and historical art movement (Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassism, etc.).
Before writing your analysis, take a few moments to quietly view your chosen artwork. Notice your sensory responses to it.
Then, ask yourself the questions in this viewing exercise to better observe how the elements of art and principles of design are used:
- What catches your eye first in the artwork? Name the visual elements involved.
- How are your eyes are pulled throughout the composition?
- Is there a discernable pattern of movement within the composition itself? How is it implied? Is it dramatic or relatively static?
- Which visual elements and principles of design are involved in your responses to the questions above?
Discussion Content
Discussions play an integral role in monitoring your course participation throughout the term. You should check back to the weekly discussions multiple times throughout the week to engage in the discussion with your professor and peers. Participation is only counted during the week in which this discussion is assigned. Be sure to appropriately cite any sources you use to support your responses with standard APA citations. Answer the prompt question(s) thoroughly, using at least 150-200 words, and respond to as many of your peers as possible. Note that responses to 2 of your peers are required for full credit. Be sure to answer any additional questions asked by your professor in the discussion threads. Your initial post is due by Day 3 of the current week, and follow up posts to your peers are due on Day 7!
